Job/School Update for Ship Math Graduates

Congratulations to the following grads: Natalie Kupchella '13 at Preston High School in Kingwood, WV, Ben Robinson '13 at Lynnhaven Middle School in Virginia Beach, VA, Jessica Rossi '12 at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA, and Rusty Zufall at Glen Burnie High School in Maryland. Also Samantha MacIntyre '13 joined the U.S. Air Force, and Jeffery Andrews '13 will be attending West Chester University's graduate school this Fall. 2013 NCTM Annual Meeting

Professors Debbie Gochenaur, Ben Galluzzo, Dave Kennedy and Tom Evitts along with student Andrew Geesaman presented at the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, held April 17-20 in Denver, CO. Dr. Gochenaur and Andrew presented "High-Impact Techniques for Asperger's in the Classroom." Dr. Galluzzo presented at a session entitled "How Big is Your Carbon Footprint?" Dr. Kennedy presented "Will This Way Work? Preservice Teachers Validate Their Solution Strategies," and Dr. Evitts presented "Making Mathematical Connections: An Important Aspect of Reasoning."

Job Update for our 2013 Secondary Certification Graduates

Halifax Elementary School's 2013 Science and Math Day

Professors Marc Renault, Ben Galluzzo, Tom Evitts, and Dave Kennedy served as presenters at Halifax (PA) Elementary School’s Science and Math Day.  Each presenter conducted four or five sessions to highlight mathematics as a career tool and as a source of enjoyment.  Dr. Galluzzo featured mathematical modeling as a way to estimate number of cheese balls in the 5th grade sessions.  Dr. Kennedy highlighted the Mira as a tool for performing reflections with 4th graders.  Dr. Renault and the 3rd graders explored “really large numbers.”  Dr. Evitts involved 2nd graders in creating a binary-number “secret code.”  Participation in this event has been an annual tradition among Ship Math Department faculty.
